Melbourne Home, Design and Living’s profile of KM Construction

As written in the September 2015 issue

For this project, KM Construction worked with the international award-winning architectural team at Saaj Design to create a truly unique home, both in design and finish, using sculpted curves and innovative products that make it stand out from the crowd.

The brief for the home was largely left up to the architects from Saaj Design, who created a house that is filled with natural light yet is shaded from the sun by large awnings. The home is designed around the ovoid-shaped pool with custom-designed sliding doors to the dining room and kitchen area. When opened, the 10-metre long sliding door system seamlessly transforms the space into an indoor/outdoor area perfectly suited for entertaining, with a built- in cantilevered Electrolux barbecue under a large roofed area to accommodate Melbourne’s unpredictable weather.

Working with an unusually-shaped lot, the home has been designed to suit the east-west orientation and is spread across two floors. There are approximately 260m2 of floor space on the ground floor – including the garage – and 93m2 on the first floor. Despite the shape of the block, there is a strong sense of privacy from neighbours, providing the homeowners a haven for rest and retreat.

As you move throughout the home, it is clear that the highest-quality workmanship has been used to create the superior finishes, and the products used create a clean, modern aesthetic. Features such as the indoor/outdoor polished white concrete with ‘Ice White’ aggregate, acres of European oak engineered floorboards and retro/modernist styling reminiscent of the 1950s provide a sense of luxury. Ideal for those who love entertaining, the kitchen is fitted out with two of the latest Miele ovens, as well as a dishwasher, stove and rangehood.

As a testament to its innovative design, this home won two Bayside City Council awards in 2014 for Most Outstanding Contribution to the Bayside Built Environment and for Most Creative Design.

KM Construction builds in the bayside area of Melbourne, but has more recently ventured as far south along the Mornington Peninsula as Sorrento. The company specialises in mid- to high-end custom homes that require great attention to detail in their architectural design and finish.

Karl Melkus started KM Construction and has more than 25 years of construction industry experience. The company has grown organically over the years from its humble beginnings as a sole trader to what it is today – a builder of unique homes for the discerning buyer.
